Rich Neighbors

چکیده
Theories of economic development suggest variously that national income increases or decreases the propensity for states to fight, while systematic evidence of the impact of development on warfare is ambiguous or non-existent. The lack of empirical support for nominally opposing claims can be reconciled if elements of both sets of arguments are partially correct. We use a formal model to construct an explanation linking economic development and conflict that resolves contradictory theories and absent evidence. Development increases the ability of states to project power while decreasing the impetus to seize territory and related resources through force. High income states fight more often over disputed policies, but less often over tangible assets. We show that “rich neighbors” are much less likely to engage in militarized disputes. ∗We thank Paul Diehl, Tanisha Fazal, Marie Henahan, Douglas Lemke, Russell Leng, Peter Liberman, James Morrow, Paul Senese, Jaroslav Tir, and John Vasquez for helpful comments. Judgment of land ownership by young refugee Palestinian and U.S. children
Children’s sense and reasoning about territory and land ownership may develop differently in contexts of poverty and where narratives of dispossession are a part of daily life and are of political and historical significance, as is the case in the Palestinian refugee context in Lebanon. In this study we looked at how 3and 5-year-old refugee Palestinian and American children distribute land amon...
متن کاملWhere the Streets Have a Name: Income Comparisons in the US
This paper analyses how neighbors’ income affect agents’ well-being using unprecedented data from the BRFSS and the City of Somerville. We conduct a multi-scale approach at the county, ZIP code and street-levels and find that the association between well-being and neighbors’ income follows an inverted U-shaped pattern in the size of the area. We find a negative relationship between well-being a...
متن کاملSelenium Hyperaccumulators Facilitate Selenium-Tolerant Neighbors via Phytoenrichment and Reduced Herbivory
BACKGROUND Soil surrounding selenium (Se) hyperaccumulator plants was shown earlier to be enriched in Se, impairing the growth of Se-sensitive plant species. Because Se levels in neighbors of hyperaccumulators were higher and Se has been shown to protect plants from herbivory, we investigate here the potential facilitating effect of Se hyperaccumulators on Se-tolerant neighboring species in the...
متن کاملLocal Derivative Pattern with Smart Thresholding: Local Composition Derivative Pattern for Palmprint Matching
Palmprint recognition is a new biometrics system based on physiological characteristics of the palmprint, which includes rich, stable, and unique features such as lines, points, and texture. Texture is one of the most important features extracted from low resolution images. In this paper, a new local descriptor, Local Composition Derivative Pattern (LCDP) is proposed to extract smartly stronger...
متن کامل3N-Q: Natural Nearest Neighbor with Quality
In this paper, a novel algorithm for enhancing the performance of classification is proposed. This new method provides rich information for clustering and outlier detection. We call it Natural Nearest Neighbor with Quality (3N-Q). Comparing to K-nearest neighbor and E-nearest neighbor, 3N-Q employs a completely different concept to find the nearest neighbors passively, which can adaptively and ...
